She has a hard time in the new class: bitchy Helene makes sure that Ida has scant chance of making friends, and there is only one place left for her on the first day of school: next to outsider Benni. One day, her teacher introduces the children to Mortimer Morrison, who travels the world looking for "magical animals". Each of these animals is destined to become a child's soulmate. Of all people, newcomer Ida and outsider Benni are the first in the class to have magical companions. From now on, Benni has the ancient, wise turtle Henrietta at his side and Ida the cunning fox Rabbat. When objects keep disappearing at school, the children and the magical animals must stick together to solve the mystery of the school thief.

La encantadora aventura de acción real con animales animados por CGI sobre una inusual escuela en la que los niños reciben un animal mágico como compañero, se centra en la nueva niña Ida, que pasa de ser una marginada a la estudiante estrella gracias a su animal mágico, el zorro parlante Rabbat. Ida ha tenido que mudarse a otra ciudad y ahora es la «chica nueva» de la Escuela Winterstein. Lo pasa mal en la nueva clase: la perra Helene se encarga de que Ida tenga pocas posibilidades de hacer amigos, y sólo queda un lugar para ella el primer día de clase: junto a la forastera Benni. Un día, su profesora presenta a los niños a Mortimer Morrison, que viaja por el mundo en busca de «animales mágicos». Cada uno de estos animales está destinado a convertirse en el alma gemela de un niño. De todos, la recién llegada Ida y el forastero Benni son los primeros de la clase en tener compañeros mágicos. A partir de ahora, Benni tiene a su lado a la antigua y sabia tortuga Henrietta y Ida al astuto zorro Rabbat.
